The designation recognizes towns that have made health and wellness as a top priority and worked to improve community health, according to the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute.

“Our mayor has said Fort Lee is on the move,” said town health officer Karen Ring about Mayor Mark Sokolich. “We really want to be a part of that and try to get all the residents involved.”

Today, more than two-thirds of the state’s municipalities participate, according to NJHCQI.

“What we are seeing on the grass roots level — from community gardens to yoga classes to supportive conversations about advance directives — is truly exciting,” said Linda Schwimmer, the president and CEO of the NJHCQI. "We believe that strong leadership in towns can strengthen the health of a community.”

Fort Lee has taken on a number of initiatives to improve public health such as its annual health fair — which attracted more than 2,000 people last year. The borough also recently opened three new public parks and started a community garden.

“We pledge that the health and fitness of our residents will continue to be a high priority with many more improvements to come in the future,” said Mayor Sokolich.
